Wheat Field with Cypresses

This painting immediately draws you in with its vibrant, swirling energy. A towering cypress tree, dark and flame-like, dominates the right side of the canvas, reaching towards a sky filled with dramatic, thick white clouds that echo the tree's upward thrust. Below, a field of ripe, golden wheat stretches across the foreground, painted with such a heavy impasto that you can almost feel the texture of the stalks. Van Gogh considered this one of his best summer paintings, capturing the intense heat of the Provençal landscape. He painted this view from the asylum at Saint-Rémy, where he was a patient, and created several versions of the scene. The dynamic brushwork, particularly evident in the wheat and sky, transforms the natural world into an expression of profound emotion.
