ABOUT THIS WORK

Painted in 1887 during Van Gogh's transformative Paris years, this portrait shows Agostina Segatori, the Italian owner of the Café du Tambourin on the Boulevard de Clichy, where Van Gogh briefly exhibited his Japanese prints and other works. The two had a romantic relationship, and there's an intimacy in the way she's rendered here, seated at one of the tambourine-shaped tables that gave the café its name. This period in Paris was crucial for Van Gogh. After arriving in 1886, he encountered the avant-garde circle including Émile Bernard and Paul Gauguin, and the city's light and energy began pulling his palette away from the dark, earthy tones of his Dutch years. You can see that shift here: the colors are brighter, the brushwork looser and more experimental, reflecting his absorption of Impressionist and Japanese influences. The painting sits alongside other 1887 works like his self-portraits and still lifes from the same year, all showing an artist rapidly evolving his visual language. Segatori herself was a well-known figure in Montmartre artistic circles, and Van Gogh regarded her with genuine affection. The café setting also connects to a broader theme in his Paris work, his fascination with the social spaces and characters of the city.
