The cradled infant

“Stop to see this intimate chalk drawing of a mother and child, an early work by Paul Gauguin. It offers a rare look at the artist's beginnings, long before his iconic Post-Impressionist paintings.”
In this early drawing, a mother cradles her child, their forms rendered in soft black chalk. The figures are gently modeled, suggesting a tender, intimate moment, with the mother's head tilted towards her infant. The artist, Paul Gauguin, was just 22 when he created this piece, still working as a stockbroker and years before his more famous paintings of Tahitian life. This drawing offers a glimpse into his nascent artistic practice, showing an interest in figural studies and domestic scenes that would evolve dramatically in his later career. The subtle shading and delicate lines capture a quiet human connection, a theme that, though presented differently, would persist in his explorations of family and community.
Five details hide in plain sight. Pick one and we’ll show you exactly where to look.
Look at the round head tucked against the woman's chest. A few curved lines are enough to make a baby held close.
Follow the shoulder and sleeve on the left. The chalk line is loose and in places doubled, so the outline feels tentative and quickly drawn.
On the right sheet, the nose and brow form a clear edge facing left. It is one of the firmest lines on this side.
Below the face, soft grey shading suggests the beard and jaw. The tone looks smudged rather than drawn in lines, giving a quiet sense of volume.
A mother and child on one side and a bearded man in profile on the other share a single sheet. Both are lightly sketched in black chalk.

Paul Gauguin, the French Post-Impressionist, abandoned a stockbroker's life for art, famously seeking 'refuge from Western civilization' in Tahiti.
