ABOUT THIS WORK

This serene winter scene captures the Benzaiten Shrine at Inokashira Pond during a snowfall, part of Utagawa Yoshimori's series celebrating the classical Japanese aesthetic triad of "Snow, Moon, and Flowers." However, there's an intriguing puzzle here: the artwork is dated 1839, when Yoshimori would have been only nine years old—far too young to create such a sophisticated woodblock print. This suggests either a dating error or perhaps a later edition of an earlier design. Yoshimori was a prolific ukiyo-e artist who worked extensively with Yokohama-e (pictures of foreigners and Western subjects) in the 1860s, as evidenced by his numerous depictions of American ships, European visitors, and international scenes. This winter landscape represents his work in the traditional Japanese vein, showing his versatility beyond the foreign subjects that dominated much of his later career. The composition follows the established conventions of the "snow, moon, and flowers" (setsugekka) theme, a beloved motif in Japanese art that celebrated the ephemeral beauty of nature through seasonal views of famous places.
