In a lush Tahitian landscape, two women kneel before a third, who cradles a child. This is Gauguin's reinterpretation of the Annunciation, transplanting the biblical scene of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child to a tropical setting, complete with vibrant, non-naturalistic colors.
