Female Passerby

Created in 1911, 'Female Passerby' captures Larionov during a pivotal transitional year in his career. At this moment, the artist was moving beyond his earlier Impressionist and Post-Impressionist phases toward the Neo-primitive style he had been developing since around 1906, partly inspired by Russian sign painting and folk art traditions. This was also the year of his first solo exhibition in Moscow—a bold one-day show that reflected his radical outlook. The subject of a female passerby on the street aligns with the artist's growing interest in everyday urban life and his fascination with capturing fleeting moments of modernity in Moscow. Just two years later, Larionov would co-found the Rayonist movement with his lifelong partner Natalia Goncharova, pioneering near-abstract art in Russia. The 1911 date places this work at the threshold of that revolutionary period, while Larionov was also deeply involved in organizing exhibitions and mentoring younger avant-garde artists like Tatlin. His work from this period often featured bold, simplified forms and a raw, direct approach that rejected academic conventions—qualities that reflected both his multiple suspensions from art school for his radical views and his embrace of the energy and visual language of the streets.
