Peru – Machu Picchu, Morning Light

Instead of the ancient Inca city itself, this painting, "Peru – Machu Picchu, Morning Light," captures the sheer, green side of a mountain rising dramatically to the sky. The artist, Georgia O’Keeffe, spent three months in Peru in 1956, and while she admired the archaeological site, she found the surrounding terrain more compelling. She wrote, “The mts. were to me more wonderful than the ruin.”

Here, she distills the monumental landscape into a series of undulating planes, bathed in a soft, ethereal light. The subtle shifts in color and tone create a sense of vastness and quietude, inviting the viewer to contemplate the raw power and serene beauty of the natural world, rather than focusing on human history.
