Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a master of capturing the vibrant, often decadent, life of late 19th-century Paris, created 'Wisdom' in 1893. Known for his keen eye as a painter, printmaker, and caricaturist, Lautrec immersed himself in the cabaret and theatrical scenes, producing iconic works like 'At the Moulin Rouge' and 'Equestrienne (At the Cirque Fernando).' This color lithograph on ivory wove paper, though not as widely known as his depictions of dancers and performers, still reflects his signature Post-Impressionist style. Lautrec's ability to convey character and atmosphere with bold lines and expressive forms is evident, even in a more intimate subject. The artwork was created when Lautrec was 29, well within his prolific period of documenting Parisian life. Its inclusion in the Art Institute of Chicago's collection, alongside other Lautrec works such as 'The Little Errand Girl' from the same year, highlights its significance within his broader oeuvre.
