Cholera outbreaks across France in the 1880s had made bathing a public health act, and mothers were being urged to handle hygiene themselves. Cassatt turns that dutiful task into something quietly sacred, the fully clothed woman paired with the half-dressed child suggesting intimacy without any erotic charge.
