ABOUT THIS WORK

In this tender and intimate portrait, Peter Paul Rubens captures his second wife, Helena Fourment, and their young son, Frans. Painted around 1630, just a year after their marriage, this work offers a personal glimpse into the artist's life, a contrast to the grand altarpieces and mythological scenes for which he was widely celebrated, such as his works like 'The Holy Family with Saints Elizabeth and John the Baptist' or 'The Wedding of Peleus and Thetis'. Rubens, a master of Flemish Baroque painting, imbues this domestic scene with the characteristic movement, color, and sensuality that defined his unique style. Helena, significantly younger than Rubens, became a frequent subject in his later works, often depicted with a radiant vitality. Here, her gentle gaze and the protective way she holds Frans speak volumes about their bond. The rich oil on wood medium allows for the luminous skin tones and the luxurious textures of their clothing, hallmarks of Rubens's prolific output as a painter of portraits and history paintings.
