ABOUT THIS WORK

Painted in 1887, this portrait of Maria Godlewska née Popiel exemplifies Władysław Czachórski at the height of his powers. By the time he created this work, the Munich-trained Polish Academic painter had already established himself as one of the most celebrated portraitists of elegant women in Central Europe. Czachórski studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, the Dresden Academy, and the Munich Academy, graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors, and it was in Munich that he made his permanent home while exhibiting widely across Poland and Europe. His portraits were famed for their extraordinary attention to the textures of fabric, jewelry, and the trappings of refined interiors — qualities that are very much on display here.

Maria Godlewska, born in 1853 and depicted here at around 34 years of age, is rendered with the polished technical realism that became Czachórski's signature. The painting belongs to a tradition of society portraiture in which the sitter's dress, accessories, and setting communicate social standing as powerfully as the face itself. Czachórski was not merely a flatterer of his subjects — he was a meticulous recorder of a vanishing world of aristocratic and bourgeois elegance in partitioned Poland. This portrait now resides in the National Museum in Warsaw, where Czachórski's work has long been celebrated.
