Madonna and Child with Saints Peter and Paul

Stefano Mulinari was an 18th-century Italian printmaker active primarily in Florence, known for his religious etchings and aquatints that captured the devotional imagery of the late Baroque period. This work, created around 1750 when Mulinari would have been just nine years old, presents an attribution puzzle that suggests either an incorrect date or possible confusion with another artist of similar name. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary holding the infant Christ, flanked by two of Christianity's most important apostles: Saint Peter, traditionally shown with keys to heaven, and Saint Paul, often depicted with a sword symbolizing his martyrdom. Mulinari's Met collection demonstrates his facility with various printmaking techniques, including aquatint's tonal effects and the delicate wash work seen in several of his religious scenes. His oeuvre shows a consistent focus on sacred subjects—from the Flagellation and Entombment of Christ to tender scenes of the Holy Family—all rendered with the refined line work characteristic of Italian printmaking traditions. This Madonna and Child follows a centuries-old iconographic formula, presenting the divine mother and son as intercessors, with the apostles serving as witnesses and pillars of the Church. The medium of etching with possible aquatint allowed Mulinari to achieve subtle gradations of light and shadow, lending these devotional images a contemplative, atmospheric quality suited to private meditation or religious instruction.
