ABOUT THIS WORK

Sam Francis, an American painter and printmaker, created this untitled color lithograph in 1963. During this period, Francis was prolific in printmaking, a medium he explored extensively, even owning his own print shop, The Litho Shop, later in his career. This artwork comes from a time when Francis was deeply immersed in exploring the expressive potential of color and form, often drawing from his experiences living and working across Europe and Asia. His exposure to French modern painting, Asian culture, and Zen Buddhism significantly influenced his artistic development, moving him away from the monochromatic abstractions of his earlier career towards richly colored works. While loosely associated with the second generation of Abstract Expressionists, Francis carved out his own unique path, becoming one of the first truly global artists. This piece, like many of his works from the early 1960s, showcases his characteristic use of vibrant hues and dynamic compositions, reflecting his ongoing fascination with the interplay of color and light.
