Study for The Fight III

Tyko Sallinen painted this study in 1920, at a time when he was firmly established as one of Finland's leading Expressionist painters and a key figure in the November Group, the collective of Finnish expressionists and cubists he helped found in late 1916. As a study — the third in a series exploring the theme of combat — it offers a rare window into Sallinen's creative process, revealing how he built toward finished compositions through raw, energetic preliminary work. Sallinen was celebrated for depicting Finnish people and life with unsparing emotional honesty, and a fight scene would have been a natural subject for an artist who believed deeply in the power of emotion and the primacy of individual expression.

Sallinen's background — a runaway tailor's apprentice raised in a severe Laestadian household — gave his work a particular earthiness and intensity. His figures tend to be rough-hewn and physical, his color and line used as instruments of feeling rather than decoration. In this study, look for the hallmarks of his Expressionist approach: distorted or dynamic figures, bold gestural marks, and a raw urgency that makes even a preparatory sketch feel charged with life. The work is held by the Finnish National Gallery, which preserves a significant body of his output.
