ABOUT THIS WORK

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's "Straße mit Passanten bei Nachtbeleuchtung" (Street with Pedestrians by Night Lighting), painted in 1927, captures the tense energy of a city street under artificial light. Kirchner was a pivotal figure in German Expressionism, a movement he helped found with Die Brücke (The Bridge) in 1905, aiming to create a new, direct mode of artistic expression. His earlier "Straßenszenen" (street scenes) from the 1910s, particularly after his move to Berlin, often depicted streetwalkers and the psychological unease of urban life. While this painting is from a later period, after his move to Davos following a breakdown during WWI, it still resonates with the angular forms and heightened emotionality characteristic of his Expressionist style. The vibrant, almost jarring colors and distorted perspectives work together to convey a sense of alienation and the disorienting rush of modern existence. Kirchner's life was marked by his rejection of traditional academic styles, his embrace of older media like woodcuts, and later, the tragic condemnation of his work as 'degenerate' by the Nazis.
