ABOUT THIS WORK

Created in 1967, 'Olive Picking' represents Reuven Rubin's mature work during his final decade, continuing his lifelong dedication to portraying the landscape and people of Israel. Born in Romania to a poor Hasidic family, Rubin emigrated to Palestine in 1923 and became one of the founders of the Eretz-Yisrael artistic style. His paintings are characterized by a Cézannesque approach combined with naive elements, depicting biblical landscapes and the daily lives of Yemenites, Hasidic Jews, and Arabs in sun-bathed, spiritually luminous scenes. This work embodies Rubin's signature integration of Eastern and Western influences—his style shows traces of Henri Rousseau's exotic sensibility and the neo-Byzantine art of his Romanian homeland. By 1967, Rubin was an established master who had served as Israel's first diplomatic envoy to Romania and received numerous honors. The olive harvest theme connects to both the ancient agricultural traditions of the Land of Israel and the Zionist vision of return to the land, a recurring motif throughout Rubin's career that portrayed Jewish connection to the landscape with sensitive, folkloric warmth.
