Reuven Rubin created this oil painting in 1957, during the mature phase of his career as one of Israel's most celebrated artists. By this time, Rubin had fully developed his distinctive style that blended modernist sensibilities with naive art, creating sun-bathed depictions of Israeli life that became iconic representations of the young nation. Born in Romania in 1893 to a poor Hasidic family, Rubin trained in Paris before settling in Mandate Palestine in 1923, where he became a founder of the 'Eretz-Yisrael' style. His work from the 1950s continued his lifelong fascination with biblical landscapes, folklore, and the people of Israel—Yemenite Jews, Hasidim, and Arabs—all rendered in his characteristic translucent, spiritual light.

This painting resides at Heichal Shlomo, Jerusalem's seat of the Chief Rabbinate, a fitting home for work by an artist whose career began designing a mizrah plaque for his hometown synagogue. Rubin's integrative approach—signing works with his first name in Hebrew and surname in Roman letters—reflected his bridge between European modernism and Jewish national identity. His Cezannesque influence, combined with elements reminiscent of Henri Rousseau's Eastern nuances and the neo-Byzantine art of his Romanian childhood, created a unique visual language that captured the optimism and pioneering spirit of mid-century Israel.
