ABOUT THIS WORK

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's "Nackter Jüngling und Mädchen am Strand" (Naked Youth and Girl on the Beach), painted in 1913, captures the raw energy and liberated spirit characteristic of the Expressionist movement, which Kirchner co-founded with Die Brücke ('The Bridge') group. This work, created the same year Die Brücke dissolved, reflects his continued exploration of the nude figure in natural settings, a theme he pursued vigorously during summer stays at the Moritzburg lakes and on the island of Fehmarn. Kirchner and his fellow artists sought to break from traditional academic styles, embracing a direct, unmediated expression of their inner urges. His studio, described by fellow artist Fritz Bleyl as a bohemian space, often hosted life-drawing sessions with non-professional models, fostering spontaneity and a rejection of societal conventions. This painting exemplifies that desire for freedom and a return to a more primal, uninhibited state, contrasting sharply with the urban scenes he would soon depict in Berlin. It's a testament to his individual artistic identity, established with his first solo exhibition around this time, before the onset of World War I drastically altered his life and art.
