ABOUT THIS WORK

Painted in 1909, just one year after Valdemar Irminger married the Danish sculptor Ingeborg Plockross, this intimate portrait almost certainly depicts her at her craft. The timing feels deliberate and tender. Irminger was 59 when he made this work, a mature artist who had spent decades painting children, soldiers, religious subjects, and portraits with what critics described as revealing sensitivity. By this point in his career he had moved well beyond his early Realist training at the Royal Danish Academy and settled into a warmer Romantic sensibility, one that suited domestic and personal subjects especially well.

There is something quietly remarkable about a painter choosing to depict his wife not at rest or in a posed, flattering arrangement, but in the middle of her own creative labor. Ingeborg Plockross was an accomplished sculptor in her own right, and Irminger seems less interested in celebrating her beauty than in honoring her concentration. The word "work" in the title carries real weight. This is not a studio portrait dressed up as something casual. It is a record of a shared life between two artists, made in the first year of their marriage, at a museum in the southern Danish city of Ribe.
