ABOUT THIS WORK

Painted in 1888, this work captures Irminger's Italian experience still fresh in his mind. He had spent three years in Italy on a scholarship from 1884 to 1887, and the Colosseum was one of antiquity's most charged subjects for any northern European artist making the journey south. The title, 'From the Old Colosseum,' suggests an intimate, partial view rather than a grand panoramic statement, the kind of quiet corner a painter finds after the tourists have moved on. Irminger was working in a Realist vein at this stage of his career, before he shifted toward Romanticism in the 1890s, so expect something grounded and observational rather than theatrical.

The painting belongs to a pivotal year for Irminger. In 1888 he also won the Royal Danish Academy's medal for his work depicting the children's hospital at Refsnæs, paintings celebrated for their sensitivity and bright open-air light. Whether those same qualities of luminosity and attentive observation carry into this Roman subject is part of what makes the work worth studying closely. For a Danish painter of his generation, the Italian journey was a rite of passage, and this canvas is one of the few surviving traces of how Irminger translated the ancient world into paint.
