ABOUT THIS WORK

Honoré Daumier, a master of social and political satire, created this lithograph for *Le Charivari*, a Parisian newspaper known for its biting commentary. Titled "Ayant enfin trouvé..." (Having finally found...), it was published in 1857, a year when Daumier also produced other works like "- Can you see the comet?... just there, at the tip of my finger ... don't lose sight of my finger tip!" for *La Comète De 1857*. This piece exemplifies his prolific output of over 4,000 lithographs, which earned him recognition in his lifetime and continue to be admired today. Daumier, though also a serious painter, made his living through these caricatures, which offered a vivid mirror to French society from the July Revolution of 1830 to the Second French Empire. After the restrictive September Laws of 1835, his focus shifted from overtly political jabs to more veiled critiques of the bourgeoisie and daily Parisian life, a theme evident in this print. His work often blurred the lines between caricature and fine art, influencing later generations of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters.
