All right, so he's dead!...

In this unsettling color lithograph, a man lies dead on a bed, his body partially covered by a sheet. A woman, her face obscured, stands over him, while a second woman, seen from behind, appears to be leaving the room. The stark composition and limited color palette amplify the dramatic tension, drawing your eye to the figures and their ambiguous actions. This print, titled "All right, so he's dead!...," was published in the French satirical magazine L'Assiette au Beurre in 1902 as part of a series called Crimes and Punishments. Félix Vallotton, active in the avant-garde group Les Nabis, often explored complex domestic scenes and societal critiques in his graphic work, and here he uses the medium of lithography to create a powerful, almost theatrical moment of aftermath.
