ABOUT THIS WORK

William Edward West, an American painter known primarily for his portraits, created "The Israelites Led by the Pillar of Fire by Night" in 1845. Born in Kentucky, West received early artistic training from his silversmith father before moving to Philadelphia to study with Thomas Sully. His career took him across Europe, where he honed his skills in Italy, France, and England, exhibiting at prestigious venues like the Royal Academy of Arts. While his portfolio includes numerous commissioned portraits for wealthy families, as well as illustrations for Washington Irving's books, this painting offers a glimpse into his engagement with biblical themes. The subject matter, depicting a pivotal moment from the Old Testament, stands apart from the typical portraits and genre scenes found in his known works, such as the mythological scenes like "The Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise" or "The Death of Procris" (both retouched in 1803). This piece showcases West's ability to tackle dramatic narrative, illustrating the divine guidance of the Israelites. He returned to the United States and continued his portrait work in Baltimore until his death.
