Napoleon Crossing the Alps

Here, Napoleon Bonaparte rears up on horseback, a dramatic, idealized vision of leadership. This painting, the first in a series of five commissioned by the King of Spain, captures the moment Napoleon led his army across the Great St Bernard Pass in May 1800. The scene is far grander than the reality of the crossing, which Napoleon likely made on a mule. Instead, David presents him as a heroic figure, a classical general guiding his troops through a formidable Alpine landscape. The work exemplifies the Neoclassical style, with its emphasis on classical forms and themes, but also hints at the emerging Romanticism in its theatricality and emotional intensity. It was created at a time when David, a former supporter of the French Revolution, had aligned himself with Napoleon, becoming a key artistic voice for the new consulate.
