“This painting dramatically depicts a pivotal moment in Welsh history: the imprisonment of Owain Goch at Dolbadarn Castle, allowing his brother to unite Wales. Notice the powerful contrast of light and shadow, making the castle feel both majestic and foreboding.”
A lone figure in red is led away by soldiers, dwarfed by the imposing stone tower of Dolbadarn Castle and the dramatic peaks of Snowdonia. This painting captures a specific moment from Welsh history: the imprisonment of Owain Goch, brother of Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, around 1255. His confinement in this formidable fortress allowed Llywelyn to pursue his ambition of uniting Wales. The stark contrast between light and shadow, with the castle looming against a turbulent sky, emphasizes the scene's gravity and the wild, untamed nature of the Welsh landscape. This work was one of two paintings submitted by the artist for his diploma to the Royal Academy in 1800.
