Gypsy Caves, Granada

Mariano Fortuny painted this evocative scene during his transformative two-and-a-half-year stay in Granada, from 1870 to 1872. While working from his studio in the Casa de Buena Vista in the Realejo neighborhood, Fortuny became captivated by the city's Moorish heritage and its living traditions. The gypsy caves of Sacromonte were among Granada's most exotic sites, where Romani communities carved homes directly into the hillside, maintaining centuries-old customs of flamenco and distinctive crafts. This work reflects Fortuny's deep engagement with Orientalist themes—a fascination that began with his 1859 trip to Morocco during the Spanish-Moroccan War and continued to define his artistic vision.

Fortuny's Granada period represents a crucial moment in his career, as he moved beyond his grand battle paintings to focus on intimate scenes illuminated by his signature colorful, iridescent brushwork. His paintings from this era anticipate Impressionist techniques while maintaining the decorative richness of Romanticism. The artist's ability to capture the interplay of light and shadow in cave dwellings, combined with his interest in depicting cultures on the margins of Spanish society, demonstrates why he was considered one of the most innovative Spanish painters of his generation before his untimely death from malaria in 1874, at just 36 years old.
