A vibrant summer day unfolds on the terrace of the Maison Fournaise, a popular restaurant on the Seine River. Here, two young women, not actually sisters, are captured in a moment of leisure. The elder, an 18-year-old future actress named Jeanne Darlot, wears a blue boater's outfit and a striking red hat, her gaze direct and confident. Her younger companion, whose identity remains a mystery, touches a basket filled with colorful skeins of yarn, her large floral headdress mirroring the bright hues. The artist used precise, controlled brushwork for their faces, creating a porcelain-like effect that stands out against the looser, more impressionistic backdrop of the river, boats, and blossoming trees beyond the railing. This painting, created in 1881, was acquired by the Art Institute of Chicago in 1933.
