ABOUT THIS WORK

Painted in 1901, this work captures a sleeping Italian woman, likely a product of Irminger's deep connection to Italy, where he lived on scholarship from 1884 to 1887. That Italian sojourn left a lasting mark on his imagination, and he returned to Mediterranean subjects throughout his career. By 1901, Irminger had shifted away from his earlier Realism toward a more Romantic sensibility, and sleeping or resting figures were a natural fit for that mode. Sleep offered painters of his generation a way to study the human form without the self-consciousness of a posed subject, and the result is often a quality of tender intimacy.

Irminger was particularly celebrated for paintings of children rendered with what critics called revealing sensitivity, and that same warmth seems to have extended to his portrayals of women at rest. The Italian setting, whether an outdoor courtyard, a sun-warmed interior, or a hillside, would have given him access to the rich Mediterranean light he admired. This piece sits within a body of work that spans portraits, religious subjects, and scenes of everyday life, all filtered through a painter who spent decades refining his eye at the Royal Danish Academy and at Charlottenborg, where he exhibited regularly from 1875 onward.
