ABOUT THIS WORK

Samuel Bourne's "Shimla. The Church Through the Trees, from Jakko" is a captivating albumen print from 1863, created during his prolific seven years in India. Bourne, a British photographer who arrived in Calcutta in early 1863, quickly established himself as a master of landscape photography. This piece exemplifies his keen eye for composition and technical expertise, qualities that made him one of the finest 19th-century travel photographers. Taken during his first major Himalayan expedition, which departed from Shimla in July 1863, this photograph captures a serene moment in the region he explored extensively. Bourne's work often involved meticulous journeys with numerous porters to carry his heavy equipment, using the wet plate collodion process to produce his striking images. This photograph is a testament to his dedication to documenting the Indian landscape and architecture, a body of work that eventually comprised approximately 2,200 images before his return to England in 1871.
