Portrait of a Woman with a Book

This elegant 1636 portrait exemplifies Willem van der Vliet's skill as a portraitist during the Dutch Golden Age. Van der Vliet, who lived and worked in Delft his entire life (c. 1584-1642), was known for both historical allegories and portraits, though his portraiture work particularly flourished during this period. The sitter, an unnamed woman holding a book, represents the intellectual aspirations of the Dutch merchant class—books were expensive luxury items and powerful symbols of learning and piety. The presence of the book suggests she was likely from a wealthy, educated family, as literacy and book ownership were markers of social status in 17th-century Netherlands.

Van der Vliet painted this work when he was approximately 52 years old, at the height of his career. His nephew Hendrick Cornelisz. van Vliet trained in his studio before moving to work with the more famous portraitist Michiel Jansz van Mierevelt. This portrait reflects the restrained elegance characteristic of Delft painting, where Van der Vliet worked alongside contemporaries who would help establish the city's reputation for refined, intimate portrayals.
