Bust of Benjamin Franklin

Created for America's Centennial celebration in 1876, this Parian porcelain bust captures Benjamin Franklin with remarkable dignity and detail. Isaac Broome, then forty years old, was among the leading ceramic sculptors working for the Ott and Brewer pottery company in Trenton, New Jersey. Parian porcelain—named for its resemblance to marble from the Greek island of Paros—was the perfect medium for commemorative patriotic sculpture. Its smooth, unglazed white surface gave the appearance of carved stone while allowing for mass production, making Franklin's likeness accessible to middle-class Americans eager to celebrate the nation's founding fathers during the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.

Broome's Franklin embodies Enlightenment ideals: the receding hairline and loose, period-appropriate clothing suggest the unpretentious philosopher-statesman rather than a formal hero. This bust was part of Broome's broader work in commemorative ceramics—he created a matching George Washington bust around the same time, also in Parian porcelain. The compact scale (just 10 inches tall) made it suitable for domestic display, transforming revolutionary history into household decoration. Broome would continue working in ceramics, creating decorative tiles and sculptural elements, but these Centennial pieces remain among his most historically significant works, capturing the nation's desire to honor its revolutionary heritage through accessible, refined artistry.
