Washerwoman

Created when Fortuny was just 20 years old, during his scholarship period in Rome, 'Washerwoman' represents the young artist's early exploration of everyday subjects before he became famous for his Orientalist scenes and elaborate battle paintings. This work was made in 1858, the very year he arrived in Rome to study at the Academia Gigi, where he focused on drawing and grand manner styles alongside fellow artists like Josep Armet i Portanell and Ricardo de Madrazo.

While Fortuny would later become celebrated for his vivacious, iridescent brushwork and dazzling depictions of Moroccan courts and Spanish ceremonies, this early work shows him observing humble, working-class life—a washerwoman engaged in her labor. The subject reflects the Romantic era's growing interest in depicting common people with dignity, though Fortuny would soon shift his focus dramatically after his 1859 commission to document the Spanish-Moroccan War. That experience transformed him into an Orientalist painter captivated by North African exoticism, leading to masterworks like 'The Battle of Tetuan.' This washerwoman scene thus captures a fleeting moment in the artist's development, before the colorful, ceremonial world that would define his mature style.
