Sir Claudius Stephen Hunter (1775–1851), Lord Mayor of London (1811)

Samuel Drummond painted this official portrait of Sir Claudius Stephen Hunter in 1813, two years after Hunter served as Lord Mayor of London. Drummond was by this point a well-established portrait painter in London, having entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1791 and been elected an associate in 1808. His sitters ranged widely across public life, from Walter Scott to Elizabeth Fry, and he was employed by The European Magazine to capture the leading personalities of the day. Hunter himself was a significant City figure, a merchant and politician who held the mayoralty in 1811, and a formal portrait like this would have been a standard marker of civic achievement.
