Prince Mikhail Andreevich Obolensky (1806–1873)

This 1850 portrait of Prince Mikhail Andreevich Obolensky is a fine example of Vasily Tropinin's mature Romantic portraiture, painted when the artist was in his mid-seventies and long established as Moscow's most celebrated portraitist. Tropinin — who spent the first half of his life as a serf — had by this point painted over three thousand portraits, earning him Academician status and a reputation for capturing the inner dignity and warmth of his subjects with remarkable psychological depth.
