ABOUT THIS WORK

This portrait was painted by Willem van der Vliet in 1631, during the Dutch Golden Age when Delft was a thriving center of artistic production. Van der Vliet worked in Delft throughout his career, where he was known primarily for his portraits and historical allegories. He was part of the same artistic community that would later produce Johannes Vermeer, and he trained his nephew Hendrick Cornelisz. van Vliet, who initially learned historical painting from him before studying portraiture with the renowned Michiel Jansz van Mierevelt.

Suitbertus Purmerent's identity beyond this portrait remains somewhat mysterious, though his commissioning of this work suggests he was a person of status in 1630s Delft. The portrait exemplifies the Dutch Golden Age tradition of sober, dignified portraiture that captured both the physical likeness and social standing of the sitter. Van der Vliet would have carefully rendered the details of Purmerent's clothing and bearing to communicate his position in society, following the conventions established by leading Delft portrait painters of the period. This work represents the mature phase of van der Vliet's career, painted just over a decade before his death in 1642.
