Two Medallions with Symbolic-Religious Representations

This small panel features two distinct medallions, each presenting a symbolic religious scene. In the upper medallion, a figure of Christ is shown in the act of blessing, surrounded by a radiant halo, while the lower one depicts a more complex narrative, likely alluding to a moral or spiritual struggle. The use of oil paint on an oak panel, typical for works of this period, allows for a richness in color and detail, even within these compact compositions. Created around 1515, this work comes from a time when artists were exploring intricate ways to convey theological messages through visual allegory. The artist, Hieronymus Bosch, spent most of his life in 's-Hertogenbosch and was a member of the Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Blessed Lady, a devotional confraternity that often inspired such religious themes.
