ABOUT THIS WORK

Painted in 1899, 'La Côte d'Azur' captures Ernest Waterlow's mature style as he approached the height of his career. By this time, the British artist had already been elected an associate of the Royal Academy (1890) and was serving as president of the Royal Watercolour Society (since 1897). Waterlow was known for landscapes 'handled with grace and distinction,' and this work likely reflects his continental travels—he had obtained a passport in 1871 to travel throughout Europe. The French Riviera, or Côte d'Azur, was a fashionable destination for British artists and tourists in the late Victorian era, drawn by its Mediterranean light and dramatic coastal scenery. Waterlow would have been captivated by the interplay of brilliant sunshine, azure sea, and the distinctive landscape of southern France. This painting represents the kind of accomplished landscape work that established his reputation, combining careful observation with an atmospheric sensibility. Just three years after completing this piece, Waterlow would receive a knighthood in the 1902 Coronation Honours from King Edward VII, recognition of his standing as one of Britain's leading landscape painters of the period.
