St Ambrose (verso)

This painting, depicting Saint Ambrose, is actually the back, or "verso," of a panel. In the 15th century, it was common for altarpieces and other devotional works to be painted on both sides, especially if they were designed to be viewed from multiple angles or turned during liturgical ceremonies. Here, Saint Ambrose, one of the four original Doctors of the Church, is shown with his traditional attributes. The artist, known as the Master of the View of Saint Gudula, was active in Brussels during the late 15th century, a period when Early Netherlandish painters were making significant innovations in oil painting and realistic detail. This particular work, dating to 1467, offers a glimpse into the rich visual culture of the time and the ways sacred figures were presented for contemplation.
