ABOUT

Born in Cologne in 1844, Wilhelm Leibl's artistic journey began with an apprenticeship to a locksmith before he pursued formal training with local painter Hermann Becker and later at the Munich Academy in 1864. His early work showed a deep admiration for Dutch Old Masters, but a pivotal moment arrived in 1869 when Gustave Courbet visited Munich.
