Born Marie-Rosalie Bonheur in Bordeaux, France, in 1822, Rosa Bonheur was destined for an artistic life. Her father, Oscar-Raymond Bonheur, was a landscape and portrait painter who actively nurtured her talent, a progressive stance for the time, influenced by his Saint-Simonian beliefs which advocated for women's education.
