Jules Olitski, born Jevel Demikovsky in Snovsk, Ukraine, in 1922, endured a challenging start; his father was executed by the Soviet government shortly before his birth. He immigrated to the United States with his mother and grandmother in 1923, settling in Brooklyn. Showing an early talent for drawing, Olitski pursued art education, attending institutions like Pratt Institute and the National Academy of Design. His studies continued in Paris on the G.I.
