Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian-born painter and art theorist who became one of the most important pioneers of abstract art in the early 20th century. Born in Moscow in 1866, he initially pursued a career in law and economics, only turning seriously to art in his thirties after being profoundly moved by an exhibition of French Impressionists, particularly Monet's Haystacks.
