Born in Boston in 1813, George Peter Alexander Healy rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most popular and productive portrait painters of his era. After his father's early death, Healy began drawing at sixteen to help support his family. He received crucial early encouragement from Jane Stuart, daughter of the famous painter Gilbert Stuart, who not only loaned him an artwork to copy but also introduced him to Thomas Sully, whose advice proved invaluable.
