Born Frank Decker in Covington, Kentucky, in 1848, Frank Duveneck's early life was shaped by his German heritage and the loss of his father to cholera. After his mother remarried Joseph Duveneck, he took his stepfather's name. By age 15, he was already studying art and apprenticed to church decorators, showing an early dedication to his craft.
