“Step into a moment of quiet devotion and architectural grandeur. This painting beautifully blends sacred figures with a serene landscape, offering a glimpse into early High Renaissance ideals through its balanced composition and thoughtful details.”

ABOUT THIS WORK

This painting draws you into a serene, balanced world, characteristic of the Umbrian school. The Madonna sits on a high throne, holding the Christ Child on her lap, a quiet focal point in a classic Renaissance composition. To her left, Saint John the Baptist gestures toward the infant, while on the right, Saint Sebastian looks contemplatively heavenward, pierced by arrows. The figures are placed beneath an elegant architectural portico, opening to a tranquil landscape with slender trees. This work was commissioned in 1493 for the convent of San Domenico in Fiesole, and the Madonna's face is said to be a portrait of the artist's wife, Chiara Fancelli, whom he married that same year. It marks an early example in Florence of the sacra conversazione style, with its pyramidal arrangement centered on the Virgin.
