Pieter Lastman (1583–1633) was a pivotal Dutch painter, celebrated not only for his own dramatic history pieces but also for his profound influence on some of the greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age, most notably Rembrandt van Rijn and Jan Lievens. Born in Amsterdam to a town-beadle father and an appraiser mother, Lastman's early life was rooted in a city on the cusp of artistic flourishing.
