Adam Elsheimer, born in Frankfurt am Main in 1578, was a remarkably influential German Baroque painter whose brief career in Rome left a lasting impact on European art. The son of a master tailor, Elsheimer apprenticed with Philipp Uffenbach before embarking on a journey to Italy, arriving in Rome around 1600.
