Peter Tillemans

Peter Tillemans was a Flemish painter who became a founder of the English school of sporting painting, capturing horse races and country estates with remarkable accuracy.

ABOUT

Born in Antwerp around 1684, Peter Tillemans, the son of a diamond-cutter, began his artistic journey studying painting in his native Flanders. Like many artists from the Low Countries, he was drawn to England, moving there in 1708 at the invitation of a picture dealer named Turner.
