Milton Avery (1885–1965) was an American modern painter whose unique approach to color and form carved a distinct path between representation and abstraction. Born in Altmar, New York, Avery moved to Connecticut and later to New York City. For decades, he supported himself with blue-collar jobs while pursuing his passion for art, attending classes at the Connecticut League of Art Students in Hartford.
