Born Karl Schmidt in Rottluff, Germany, in 1884, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff was a pivotal figure in the development of German Expressionism. His artistic journey began in Dresden in 1905, where he enrolled in architecture but quickly found his true calling alongside friends Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Fritz Bleyl.
